Executive Producer
* Makes the business decisions, financing, co-production and distribution deals at the studio level.

Producer
* Hires staff, crew, directors and writers. Communicates with four to seven people while assigned to major studio, raises the capital, ensures that the picture stays on budget, can take control in post-production.

Line Producer
* Assists in the budget layout, represents the producer and the director.

Associate Producer
* Writes the script, works with the producer and the director.

Director
* In charge of total creative aspect of picture artistically responsible for the directions of actors and for final cut.

Key Talent
* The main talent hired for the film, the "STARS" or principals.



BELOW THE LINE

Production Staff:

Unit Production Manager (UPM)
* In charge of the whole production, works with the 1st AD to support what the director needs, controls day to day operations and the management side of the business.

1st AD (Assistant Director)
* Responsible for the logistic, production staff, schedule, and may delegate work to the production manager. Generally calls "Quiet on the Set," "Roll Camera," and "Mark it." He/She is the crew boss on the set.

2nd AD (Assistant Director)
* Works with the actors, schedules call time for make-up and talent's wardrobe for talent's well being.

Production Coordinator
* Responsible for scheduling extras and directs them while they are on the set.

1. Generally for office work and coordinating the influx of information with production manager.
2. May have assistants to help obtain local permits, also coordinates all outside sources vendors, catering, police departments, fire departments, and security.

Location Manager
* In charge of locating all exterior and interior locations to be used in the picture, also in charge of city permits, petitions, and parking for crew and production vehicles.

Transportation Captain
* In charge of all picture vehicles, production vehicles, parking logistic, vehicle permits and security.

Script Supervisor
* Maintain the continuity of the picture. Notes every minute detail of each scene, works side by side with the director.

Casting Director
* Matches the role to talent, in charge of casting principal talent, day players, bit parts, extras, etc.

Production Accountant / Auditor
* Maintains payroll and all costs related to the filming. Provides reports that reflect the relative "on-budget" status.

Stunt Coordinator
* Coordinates stunts to be performed and works out the logistic.

Special Effects Coordinator
* Coordinates and organizes all special effects.

Production Assistant (PA)
* Assistant head of departments, duties vary depending on department assigned. (EX: taking extras to make-up/wardrobe or making location maps.)


ART DEPARTMENT

Production Designer
* Art department boss, defines picture style, decides what type of "look" to be used to maintain picture continuity.

Art Director
* Works closely with the production design, delegate assignments to each art department.

Set Decorator
* Delegates and assigns duties to the painters and set construction as to how and when it will be done, actually decorates the set.

Prop Master
* Responsible for all props handled by actors used in each scene, takes props and stores them for the next use.

Wardrobe
* Wardrobe generally makes and provides all costuming for talent.

Make up Artist
* Applies make up for the talent.

Storyboard Artist
* Transfers script into visual format.



CAMERA DEPARTMENT

Directory of photography (DP)
* Heads up camera dept, decides type of lighting, takes meter reading. Second only to the director, while shooting.

Camera Operator
* Operates the camera dept, overseas maintenance and equipment lists.

1st Assistant Cameraman (1st AC)
* Follows focus, measures distance from lens to subject, focus lens during shooting. Handles and changes lenses.

2nd Assistant Cameraman (2nd AC)
* Makes the floor for focus distance, handles the slate and writes camera reports.

3rd Assistant Cameraman (3rd AC)
* Loads the film magazine, makes the canisters, maintains inventory log, ships exposed footage to labs.

Video Assistant Cameraman (Loader)
* Shoots production stills for publicity.


ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT

Gaffer
* In charge of the electrical department, choose lights, where to set up and how to focus them, takes light meter readings and decides where to tie in for power.

Best Boy
* The gaffer's assistant, may actually hangs the lights.

Electrician
* Handles cable, hook up generators, makes on set plugs function, works with gaffer and best boy.


GRIP DEPARTMENT

Key Grip
* Determines needs for any and all camera support gear, light stands and any set rigging.

Dolly Grip
* Controls support system for the camera. Lays tracks for the dolly, operates the dolly and crane.

Grip
* Handles the scrims or barn doors placed over lights that control shadows, may situate apple boxes where needed, responsible for all set riggings.


SOUND DEPARTMENT

Sound Mixer
* Records the sound and adjusts level, controls the nagra recorder, responsible for final mixes of all sources.

Boom Operator
* Holds the microphone on a boom to place in near the talent.

Cable Puller
* Handles the power, moves the microphone or video cables.
